Laser Genesis treatments are often described as soothing and relaxing—many patients compare the warmth to basking in the sun. As your provider moves the handpiece over your skin, you’ll gradually feel gentle heat building in the treatment area.

During your IPL Photofacial, the skin is first cooled with ice before the light pulses begin. The sensation is often compared to a quick snap of a rubber band as the laser targets areas of pigmentation. The skin is then cooled again immediately afterward for maximum comfort.

Pre-Care Instructions:

• Consultation: Schedule a consultation to discuss your skin concerns, medical history, and suitability for treatment. Please notify us if you have a history of herpes or cold sores, as further medication may be needed.
• Avoid Sun Exposure: Minimize sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning products for at least 2-4 weeks before the treatment. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF regularly, even on cloudy days.
• Avoid Certain Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, as some medications may increase sensitivity to light. They may advise you to stop certain medications temporarily. Photosensitizing medications including doxycycline and minocycline should be discontinued three days prior to the treatment.
• Avoid Skin Irritants: Avoid using harsh skincare products or treatments that may irritate the skin, such as chemical peels or exfoliants, in the weeks leading up to the procedure. Do not use any products containing active ingredients (i.e. tretinoin, retinol, glycolic/salicylic acid, etc.) or topical prescriptions on the treatment area for one week. Avoid Accutane (chemical peels or isotretinoin products) for six (6) months prior. Let your doctor know if you have a history of hyperpigmentation.
• Prior to Appointment: Shave the treatment area a day or two before your session. Do not wax or use depilatories for 1-2 weeks prior to your appointment. Please do not wear makeup on the day of treatment.

Post-Care Instructions:

• Avoid Heat: Avoid hot baths, saunas, and activities that may cause excessive sweating for 24-48 hours post-treatment.
• Cool Compress: Apply a cool compress or cold pack to the treated area if there is any discomfort or redness.
• Sun Protection: Strictly avoid sun exposure for a few days after treatment. Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with a high SPF to protect the treated area. Reapply as directed.
• Gentle Skincare: Your skin will be fragile for 2-3 days. Use gentle cleansers, do not rub the skin and avoid hot water during this time. Do not use a loofah for one week. Do not use any retinoids, tretinoins, alpha or beta hydroxy products, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents, vitamin C products, scrub, exfoliate, or have chemical peels performed on the treatment area for one week.
• Avoid Hair Removal Methods: Avoid waxing, plucking, or any other hair removal methods that involve pulling out hair from the root for a few weeks post-treatment.
• Avoid Scratching: Do not scratch or pick at the treated area to minimize the risk of infection and irritation.
• Follow-up Appointments: Schedule any recommended follow-up appointments as advised by your healthcare professional. Multiple treatments are required to see optimal results.
